Irvine Regional Park, 21501 Chapman Ave., 714/633-8074, is in Santiago Canyon, six miles east of town. The oldest regional park in California, this 477-acre area was opened in 1898. There is a nature center/museum, and the William Harding Nature Area lies along a hiking trail. The surrounding hills are full of wildlife, and there are numerous walking trails.

Pacific Wilderness Institute, 1132 E. Katella Ave., 714/997-5506 or 998-4596, offers classes in hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing, ski touring and ski mountaineering. They also rent diving gear and provide diving instruction.
Santa Ana Mountains
Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park, 714/831-2174, is on Highway 74 (Ortega Highway) near San Juan Capistrano. It is the county's largest park (7,600 acres) and extends nearly five miles along the highway. The park has a campground, a nature center, miles of trails and excellent equestrian facilities. It also is a good place to see wildlife.
O'Neill Regional Park is a 3,100-acre area with miles of trails and excellent equestrian facilities.
San Juan Loop Trail begins across from the Ortega Country Cottage general store 19½ miles up Ortega Highway from I-5. It is a good, well-marked trail, 2.2 miles long over diverse terrain. Stay left when you meet the Chiquito Trail and go left again as the trail crosses behind the Upper San Juan Campground.
Tustin
Peters Canyon Regional Park, Jamboree Rd. and Canyon View Ave., 714/538-4400, is the county's newest park. Containing 350 acres, it offers five miles of hiking, horseback and mountain biking trails. There is also a large reservoir, but fishing is not permitted.
